Sands of Luce Holiday Park, a family-operated business in scenic Sandhead, Galloway, has experienced rapid growth in recent years. The increasing number of bookings led Park Manager Jack Cooper to expand the park by converting additional land for camping and caravans. Without access to mains drainage, Jack turned to GRAF UK to design a suitable wastewater treatment solution that could handle peak visitor numbers and operate on the single-phase power available on site.
GRAF UK designed a custom 2-line 165PE Klaro sewage treatment plant tailored for Sands of Luce. This system, compliant with SEPA’s stringent effluent standards, can run on single-phase power. The dual-line setup allows one line to be shut down during off-peak seasons, maintaining efficiency and high effluent quality year-round. Local contractors Torbet Plant Hire managed the installation, while McClymont Construction, the site’s electrical contractor, handled the power connections.
The bespoke system includes four 16,000L Carat XL tanks and two compressors with control panels. Initially, wastewater is collected in two Carat XL tanks for sludge storage. The sewage is then airlifted into two SBR Carat XL tanks equipped with bottom diffusers that pump air to sustain microorganisms, which break down the solids. After aeration, the solids settle, and clear water is discharged into a soakaway. Remaining sludge is returned to the primary tanks. Each SBR tank has its own compressor and control panel, both powered by single-phase electricity, unlike typical systems that require three-phase power.
The project faced two main challenges: high-water table influenced by tidal water, necessitating a low-profile solution without concrete foundations, and strict effluent standards due to the coastal location. The intelligent design of GRAF UK’s system allowed for simple installation and convenient maintenance, meeting these challenges effectively.
The installation of GRAF UK’s Klaro sewage treatment plant has successfully addressed the wastewater management needs of Sands of Luce Holiday Park. The system operates efficiently during peak and off-peak seasons, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and enhancing the park’s sustainability.
Jack Cooper, Park Manager, expressed satisfaction with the project: “Our project was demanding in two main aspects. Firstly, the location of the plant had a high-water table influenced by tidal water, meaning we needed a low-profile solution that would not require concrete foundations. Secondly, due to our coastal location, the plant needed to adhere to the most stringent effluent levels imposed by SEPA. Our contractors and electrician both commented on the intelligent design of the system allowing for a simple install and convenient maintenance. I have been very impressed by the product and service provided by GRAF UK, I will certainly use them again in the future and would recommend them to any operator.”
