A Huge Milestone on Our Off-Grid Self Build | Commissioning Day
A couple of months ago, Andrea and Dan took another major step towards building their dream off-grid home with the installation of their Graf One2Clean wastewater treatment system.
Now we’re back in rural Wales to see just how much progress they’ve made. The roof is taking shape, the original barn is beginning to come back to life, and today marks another important milestone as the One2Clean system is officially commissioned.
For Andrea and Dan, commissioning isn’t just another box to tick. It provides the confidence that everything has been installed correctly, unlocks the next stage of the build, and brings them one step closer to living completely self-sufficiently.

The dream
After 15 years spent getting their last home exactly right, Dan and Andrea wanted to be ambitious. They sold a beautifully finished 1930s bungalow for a bare plot and an old barn in Wales, ready to build a fully off-grid home from the ground up.
The reality
Off-grid living looks romantic from the outside. In practice, it’s building around full-time jobs from a van on-site, racing the light through Welsh winters, and reluctantly accepting that some jobs need more than two pairs of hands. So, a team came in to help make the most of every dry day.
Power → Water → Waste
Going off-grid meant building three essential systems, each one unlocking the next. First solar power and batteries, then a borehole and filtration system for water, and finally, a wastewater treatment plant. Until that last piece was in place, every shower and every top-up meant a trip to the nearest campsite.
Why GRAF
When it came to wastewater, there was no room for compromise. The system had to run efficiently off a limited power budget, and its output had to be clean enough to release straight into a natural watercourse. Dan and Andrea chose GRAF’s energy efficient One2Clean system, built with no moving parts to fail, made from 100% recycled materials, and backed by a team that actually picked up the phone.
The milestone
Installing the One2Clean was the last piece of the puzzle. It was the moment Dan and Andrea stopped needing campsite runs and started living fully off-grid, on their own terms. One more system done, one step closer to home.
We came across GRAF’s content, and it was really useful – they weren’t just selling, they were explaining the process, explaining what it does and how it works, which is exactly what we needed. Having our power and water and now our wastewater all sorted here, right on our land, has been massive – it’s our own little ecosystem. The commissioning process has been really valuable, both in terms of the confidence and reassurance that everything is set up and installed correctly, and being able to chat with Godfrey has been really, really insightful.
Product highlighted in this story
Energy efficiency was high on our list of requirements — the One2Clean's so low on energy use, the compressor turns on for half the amount of time as other ones, and we're watching every watt. We're sending the wastewater down into the watercourse, so it absolutely had to be clean — we want to put this in once and then leave it, not worry about it breaking or needing fixing. We love that it's simple — there's no mechanical moving parts that can break or need replacing — and it's made from 100% recycled materials, which is an important consideration for us.
