Little Green Fingers at Lock29

Children’s Gardening Week gave us the perfect excuse to get out into the community and have some proper fun! We set up at Lock29 in Banbury and invited local families down to learn about sustainable gardening, saving water, and growing their own produce.

We had three brilliant stations set up, each focusing on different aspects of green living. The kids absolutely loved getting their hands dirty while learning some seriously useful stuff about looking after our planet.

At our composting corner, Debs introduced everyone to “King Wiggles”, the compost king himself! The kids were fascinated learning how their leftover dinner scraps could become fantastic garden food. With games, stickers, and special King Wiggles crowns, even the squeamish ones were soon getting excited about worms and rotting vegetables. Who knew waste could be so entertaining?

Catherine ran our “Grow Your Own” section, and honestly, watching kids’ faces light up when they realised they could grow their own food was priceless. Using our urban balcony raised beds, families planted easy-to-grow fruit and vegetables. The sunflower planting was a massive hit – we sent everyone home with their own plant and challenged them to grow the tallest one.

“There’s nothing quite like seeing a child realise they can grow their own strawberries,” Catherine laughed. “These raised beds are perfect for families with small gardens or even just balconies – sustainable living for everyone!”

Over at our rainwater station, Noonie had kids playing in sandboxes (yes, really!), colouring, and learning how collecting rainwater helps gardens thrive. The hands-on approach meant they actually understood why saving water matters, rather than just being told it’s important.

From the moment the event started, we had a steady stream of families eager to get involved. The energy was infectious, kids were genuinely excited about composting, growing vegetables, and saving water.

The whole day reinforced why we love getting involved in community events. Making sustainability fun and accessible helps create the next generation of people who actually care about our planet’s future.

We’re already planning more community activities like this one. Building connections with local families while promoting environmental awareness. That’s exactly what we’re all about.
