Stormwater management for Barratt Homes

When WM Donald needed an efficient and compliant stormwater management solution for Barratt Homes’ Riverside Quarter development in Mugiemoss, they turned to Aberdeenshire water specialist Filpumps. Seeking a durable system that could handle the unique hilly terrain and meet Scottish Water’s stringent runoff criteria of 35.1 litres per second, Filpumps approached GRAF UK for assistance.

GRAF UK’s team designed and installed two custom stormwater attenuation systems in two phases. The first phase featured a 1,929m³ system built using:

  • 2,120 heavy-duty EcoBloc Maxx modules for deep underground placement
  • 6,200 EcoBloc Light crates for shallower applications
  • 140 EcoBloc Flex modules with built-in inspection channels for easy maintenance

The second phase included a 1,678m³ system, comprising:

  • 7,189 EcoBloc Maxx modules
  • 146 EcoBloc Flex modules

The hilly profile of the site necessitated a tiered approach, with parts of the system deeper underground than others. GRAF UK’s solution utilised a combination of EcoBloc Light, Flex, and Maxx modules to suit varying depths:

  • The first tank required a minimum earth cover of 560 millimetres.
  • The second tank required a cover of 1,220 millimetres.

This strategic use of materials allowed for cost savings by deploying heavy-duty EcoBloc Maxx crates only where necessary and using lighter models elsewhere.

The installed system at Mugiemoss is designed to handle extreme storm events expected once every 100 years, with an additional 20% capacity to account for climate change, ensuring robust flood protection for the development.

Syd Ross, water and wastewater specialist at Filpumps, praised GRAF UK’s work: “We chose to work with GRAF UK again because we knew the team would offer a reliable, cost-effective solution, managing every stage independently and efficiently. Importantly, GRAF UK delivered both phases within a tight timeframe, and the installation team was extremely professional.”

GRAF UK successfully provided a tailored stormwater management solution for the Barratt Homes development in Mugiemoss, meeting regulatory requirements and addressing site-specific challenges. This project underscores GRAF UK’s capability to deliver effective, timely, and professional solutions for complex water management needs.
