Loch Leven wastewater treatment system

Loch Leven’s Larder, a family-run attraction located on the picturesque banks of Loch Leven in Kinross, South Perthshire, draws over 300 visitors daily during the high season. The site includes a working farm, a restaurant, a deli, a gift shop, and a playground. Given its location near a Special Protection Area (SPA) for wildfowl, as designated by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), the attraction needed to upgrade its wastewater treatment system to comply with stringent phosphate and nitrate discharge requirements. Having previously installed a GRAF UK system at his home, owner Robin Niven chose GRAF UK for this critical project.

Our Area Sales Manager at GRAF UK, designed a custom wastewater treatment solution to meet the needs of up to 150 people. The system features a Klaro XXL wastewater treatment plant, complemented by two 32,000-litre Carat XXL tanks and a phosphate-dosing pack. Stewart Robb Plant Limited, frequent collaborators with GRAF UK, were tasked with the installation of the new system.

The Klaro XXL system utilises sequencing batch reactor (SBR) technology to provide efficient wastewater treatment. This system includes two chambers: one for solid separation and another for aerating and treating the wastewater. Microorganisms in the system biologically clean the water, allowing sludge to settle at the bottom while clarified water rises to the top. The addition of the phosphate-dosing pack ensures compliance with SEPA’s strict discharge limits.

The newly installed system at Loch Leven’s Larder effectively reduces phosphate discharge to an impressive 0.2mg/l, far exceeding SEPA’s requirement of 2mg/l. This ensures that the wastewater treatment process is not only compliant but also environmentally sustainable. The Klaro XXL system’s efficient treatment process requires minimal maintenance, with only an annual check-up needed to ensure smooth operation.

Robin Niven, owner of Loch Leven’s Larder, expressed his satisfaction: “We’re absolutely delighted – and relieved – to have finally found a fully compliant system that can provide us with long-term, reliable wastewater treatment. It’s a real weight off our shoulders, and we can now just go about our daily business of running the farm, the shop, and the restaurant, knowing that the only maintenance required is an annual check-up to ensure the smooth running of the system.”
