Stormwater attenuation EcoBloc system for BMW

BMW’s Hams Hall engineering plant in Warwickshire, renowned for producing advanced three and four-cylinder petrol engines, has embarked on an upgrade to support its next generation of production. To aid this transformation, GRAF UK provided a comprehensive stormwater attenuation solution, ensuring the facility is prepared for future expansion and environmental challenges.

Since 2001, Hams Hall has powered over five million BMW and MINI cars with its engines. As the manufacturing hub grows to meet increasing consumer demand, upgrades to the site have become essential. These improvements are part of BMW’s vision to maintain a state-of-the-art facility.

Following a successful previous collaboration, GRAF UK was chosen to design, supply, and install an EcoBloc Maxx and EcoBloc Flex Stormwater attenuation system at Hams Hall. This system supports the plant’s expansion while future-proofing its infrastructure.

GRAF UK’s design included a slightly deeper tank of 1.09 metres, exceeding the original specification of one meter. The high void ratio of the EcoBloc system allowed for a reduced tank footprint by nearly 75 square metres, resulting in significant savings on excavation, spoil removal, backfill, and gravel.

The EcoBloc crates’ stackable design meant the project was completed efficiently with only five lorry loads, compared to the higher number needed for single-piece crates. This also minimised the storage space required before installation.

Throughout the project, the design underwent a few changes, including additional inspection runs and slight adjustments to the tank’s position. Despite these changes, the project proceeded smoothly. Debra Butler from GRAF UK’s Stormwater Team praised the collaboration with Stephen and Will at Glencar for their organisation and professionalism.

The stormwater attenuation system is now operational at Hams Hall, providing a sustainable solution capable of handling adverse weather conditions and reducing flood risk. This upgrade supports BMW’s vision for a modern, efficient, and environmentally responsible engineering site.
